ARMS AND FLAGS

Countries, cities, regions, corporate bodies, officials, and even individuals, recognize the value of having clearly identifiable symbols to represent them, on buildings, in the open, at sea, on vehicles, products, stationery and in other places. One of the great traditions of symbology is heraldry, which developed among the knights and rulers of medieval Europe, but is now to be found in many parts of the World and many contexts.

Flags are of older origin than heraldry, but the two are often closely connected. Many modern flags are heraldic in origin or nature, and some come directly within the domain of heraldry (e.g. banners).

There are many websites and books devoted to these subjects. On this site, I hope to develop my own introduction to them, but also to produce my own designs and proposals, often for speculative scenarios (e.g. what might the flags and arms of an independent Wales look like?).
